What is a Second Passport?
According to the general policy of the United States, “no person shall bear or be in possession of more than one valid or potentially valid passport of the same type at any time, unless authorized by the Department of States.” However, getting a second passport is said to be an exception to this rule. U.S. citizens are allowed to apply for a second valid passport when required for their travel needs. In order to acquire necessary visas, a second valid passport may be necessary.Getting a second passport is also a good idea when traveling between countries where security may be an issue.
Who can apply for a Second Valid U.S. Passport?
This exception comes with a limitation and is not issuable to everyone. Following are the circumstances in which a second valid passport may be issued by the United States Bureau of Consular Affairs.
- In need of a Second Passport if the visiting country could deny visa of entry due to markings or stamps in your current passport of other countries visited in the past.
- In need of a passport for emergency travel but is unavailable because of delays in getting travel visas or other legal application process which requires passport submission.
- A second passport can only be issued if your travel is incomplete due to itinerary changes or your current passport cannot be canceled as you need to obtain a new one.
It is important to understand that when applying for a second passport, you must be able to give a valid reason for your request, and the government must approve the decision. If you are able to complete your travels with a single original passport, the second passport will not be issued.
