Second Valid Passport

According to the general policy of the United States, “no person shall bear or be in possession of more than one valid or potentially valid passport of the same type at any time unless authorized by the Department of States.” However, getting a second passport is said to be an exception to this rule. U.S. citizens are allowed to apply for a second valid passport when required for their travel needs. In order to acquire necessary visas, a second valid passport may be necessary. Getting a second passport is also a good idea when traveling between countries where security may be an issue.

It is important to understand that when applying for a second passport, you must be able to give a valid reason for your request, and the government must approve the decision. If you are able to complete your travels with a single original passport, the second passport will not be issued.

This depends on the service you have chosen. If you have decided to apply for a routine passport, the processing time is from 12-16 weeks. The processing time can get extended by 2 to 3 weeks more if there is an increase in passport application submissions during peak travel times. This is usually when the holiday season approaches and people plan for vacations.

Following are the steps you must complete in order to apply for a second passport:

 Step 1: Complete DS-82 application form 

To apply for a second valid passport, you will need an application form called DS-82. This form will have to be completed online. The passport office will not accept hand-written DS-82 applications. Once you have completed your application form, print it on two pages making sure it is not back to back. This form must have an original signature of the applicant. 

Step 2: Gather all required documents 

Once you have completed the online form, the following is the list of documents you must prepare before you start your application process:

• Current valid, signed 10-year U.S. passport. Two passport photos (2″ x 2″ with a white background).
• A photo service is available at our office.
• Please call for a Letter of Authorization.
• Proof of departure date – computer generated flight itinerary from the airline or a travel agency or copy of airline ticket.
• A business letter, signed by the applicant, addressed to the passport office, explaining why a second, quick passport is necessary.
• Money order or check payable to the US Department of State for $190.00
