After you complete your passport application process and submit all the documents to the US Department of State, the next thing on your list is checking your passport application status. It is important to keep track of your passport application so that you know when you will get your passport or where your personal documents are.
To be able to check the status for your passport application, it will take 7-10 business days after which it will be trackable online. Automatic updates can also be received on your application status by providing email address after finding your due application in the Online Passport Status System.
How do I track my Expedited Passport Application?
To track your passport application, you will not have to do anything. We will ask you for your cellphone number at the time of application and you will receive automatic update on your phone about your application progress.
How do I track my Routine Passport Application?
To track your passport application, you will have to visit the Department of State website. But before that you will be required to have the the following information :
- Last Name: include suffixes and hyphens as appropriate
- Date of Birth: Month-Day-Year format
- The last four digits of Social Security Number
Passport application status can be either checked online or by phone.
How to check online?
- Go to Application Status section of the State Department website.
- Click on the Online Passport Status System link to check your application status.
- Read the Privacy and Computer Fraud and Abuse Acts Notices and Disclaimers. Tick the box and click the ‘Submit’ icon
- Enter your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number.
- Type in the code shown in the given space and click on ‘Submit.’
How to check by phone?
If you wish to talk over a phone, than call the National Passport Information Center and speak to a Customer Service Representative. The following is the contact details:

Once you enter your details online or through a phone, you will have information of the date the passport office received your application and it would indicate at what stage of the application process your passport is. You will also be notified once the passport is sent to you through mail.
Generally, it would arrive sooner but it is estimated to take up to six weeks for the arrival of passport through mail. This applies for routine passport application. For normal expedited processing, it can take up to three weeks. If you have chosen to get your passport expedited at an agency like 24 Hour Passport and Visas, you will have your passports in as soon as 24 Hours.
Did not receive your passport?
After 10 business days of a change in status and you did not receive your passport, than please contact the National Passport Information Center. A form (DS-86 Form) will have to be filled in. On the Department of State website, it also states, “If you do not report the non-receipt of your passport within 90 days from the date the passport was issued, you will be required to reapply and pay all the applicable fees.”

This is only for those who have a different address for passport delivery as compared to the one on their application forms.
