When applying for an emergency passport, the first thing you must do is remember to keep calm. As you apply for your passport application, double-check if you have filled in the right information. Messing up an emergency passport application is going to cost you your travel. The U.S government may reject your application if an error is noted in the application process. Therefore follow 24 Hour Passport and Visas checklist to make your application process for an emergency passport easier.
Before applying for an emergency passport, you must consider the time constraint and the cost you can afford. Be calm and calculate the time you have before you need to leave the country. You are also required to show evidence of your travel itinerary when you apply for your passport, so make sure you have planned this before starting your passport application process.
Consider other factors and see if you need a passport. If you have to travel to countries including Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico or Bermuda, US passport cards can be used instead of a passport. The passport card is however limited to only land and seaport entry. Air travel is not permitted with the passport card and you must have your passport book in hand. It is also not valid in other countries besides the ones listed above.
What is an Emergency Passport?
An emergency passport can be referred to as the urgent need for a new passport, passport renewal or other passport services due to emergency situations. These situations are defined by Travel State Gov as serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family that require you to travel outside the United States within 72 hours (3 business days). When applying for an emergency passport, you are required to provide a life-or-death emergency reason. You will not be able to apply for an emergency passport if your reason fails to convince the Department of State. There is a different passport application process to follow if you do not require a passport in less than 72 hours (3 business days).
If your travel plans are within 6-8 weeks time then you can get your passport expedited either through the travel state gov department. For this, no emergency reason is required but you do need to consider the option of it taking longer based on the volume of applications that the department of state has to deal with. If you have less than 3 weeks before your travel, you can get your passport expedited through a passport expeditor agency such as ours. An immediate reason to travel outside the country will be required. Keep in mind that the passport expedition will come with an additional charge.
How do I get an emergency passport?
There are two ways you can apply for an emergency passport. First, you can apply directly through the US travel state gov or either through a private passport agency like 24 Hour Passport and Visas depending on how quickly you require your emergency passport.
You can get an emergency passport through the US travel.state.gov popular links or call to make an appointment. When you apply, make sure that you provide the following documents:
- The right passport application form (new passport, passport renewal, lost/stolen or other passport services) with all the supporting documents.
- Proof of the life – or – death emergency (death certificate, a statement from a mortuary, or a signed letter from a hospital or medical professional). Make sure that the document submitted is translated into English or it will not be accepted and could lead to rejection of the emergency passport application.
- Proof of travel itinerary.
You can call them for an appointment from the United States at the following numbers and timings:
- 1-877-487-2778 or 1-888-874-7793 (TTY/TDD)
Monday – Friday (8:00 am to 5:00 pm), Saturday (10:00 am to 3:00 pm)
- 202-647-4000 if you are contacting after-hours listed above
The other way in which you can apply for an emergency passport is through a passport agency. The advantage of applying through a passport agency like 24 Hour Passport and Visas is that you can get your passport in as soon as 24 hours. We have a detailed procedure which makes the application process less confusing as compared to when you are applying for it yourself. With assistance at every step, you can apply for your emergency passport at our nearest office. There is an additional fee which you will have to pay as compared to when applying with the travel.state.gov. This fee is for the purpose of speedying your application process. Check the cost for your passport here.
What documents are needed for emergency passport?
Getting the right documents is very important while applying for an emergency passport. Following is an emergency passport checklist for your documents:
- Required form for your application process (DS-11 or DS-82)
- Two passport photos (2″ x 2″ with a white background). A photo service is available at our office.
- Original/certified U.S. birth certificate. NOTE: A certified birth certificate has a registrar’s raised, embossed, impressed, or multicolored seal, registrar’s signature, and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar’s office (which must be within 1 year of your birth), or an expired US passport or Original naturalization certificate.
- Proof of Identity (a valid driver’s license or government-issued photo I.D).
- Please call for a Letter of Authorization.
- Travel itinerary.
- Certified Check or Money Order payable to the “US Department of State”.
- 24 Hour Passport & Visas – Online Order.
How long does it take to get an emergency passport?
An emergency passport is usually issued within 72 hours (3 business days) by the U.S department if required for life – or – death emergencies. This is when you have directly applied through the travel state gov internet sites. You can visit the travel.state.gov official website for detailed information on this application process.
When expediting through a passport agency similar to 24 Hour Passport and Visas, you can get it in as soon as 24 hours. This comes with an additional charge as compared to the regular passport application in order to speed up the process.

If you wish to apply for an emergency passport via the Department of State, you must have a valid life or death emergency reason for you to be able to apply for an emergency passport or a same day passport. This reason is defined by Travel State Gov as serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in the immediate family that require you to travel outside the United States within 72 hours (3 days). You must be able to prove this reason by providing the required documentation such as a death certificate, a statement from a mortuary, or a signed letter from a hospital or medical professional. Failure to provide evidence or not providing a convincing reason to the Department of State could result in the emergency passport application process disapproval. You must also have all the documents listed on the emergency passport checklist ready when applying.
