What is the Real ID Act?
The real ID Act was established in 2005 in an attempt to transform the US federal law on security, authentication, and issuance procedure standards for drivers’ licenses and identity documents. According to the United States Department of Homeland Security, state drivers’ licenses and ID cards need to be accepted by the federal government for official purposes. These purposes defined by the Secretary of Homeland Security include:
- Boarding a commercially operated airline flight
- Entry into federal buildings
- Entry into nuclear power plants
If you do not obtain a valid Real ID Act compliant ID, then you shall not be permitted to board a commercial or a fly domestically within the United States, access entry into federal buildings or nuclear power plants. While this Act was already established in 2005, it was not fully enforced and extensions were granted. However, it is going to change by October 1, 2020, where no extensions will be granted and Real ID-compliant Act will be fully implemented.
Does everyone need a real ID by 2020?
By October 1, 2020, all US citizens who intend to travel by air within the United States and are aged 18 years or older will have to get a complaint ID. Real ID compliant’s include:
- Valid passport
- Passport card
- Driver’s licenses
- State-issued enhanced driver’s license
- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- US Department of Defense ID (including IDs for dependents)
- Permanent resident (PR) card
- Border crossing card
- Tribal-issued photo ID
- HSPD-12 PIV card
- Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
- Transportation worker identification credential
Do I need Real ID if I have passport?
For domestic flights travel, you are not required to have your passport with you however, you must hold a valid identification card or ID. If you are not aware of the Real ID Act, your driver’s license or other ID you may choose to present to the airport security checkpoint may no longer be valid. You must update your ID or have a valid passport along to fly within the United State.
If you do not have a Real ID and have planned to fly domestically, you could apply for a passport. Depending on the time frame you require your passport, you could choose to apply a routine or expedited passport service. A routine passport takes approx. 12 to 16 weeks after the U.S. Department of State has received the submission of your documents depending on the volume of applications. While an expedited passport service takes 4 to 6 weeks when expedited through the post office or as little as 24 hours when expedited with a passport expeditor agency such as 24 Hour Passport and Visas. 24 Hour Passport and Visas fee includes an expedited processing fee in addition to the government charges. We charge this fee in order to speed up the processing of your passport application. Click here to order a passport now!
Are your identification IDs checked real ID Compliant?
How would you know the difference between Real ID-compliant cards and previously issued IDs? For this, you will have to take a look at your IDs and look for a star marked at the top of your identification cards. If you do not see the star marked or are unsure about it then contact your state driver’s license agencies.
47 out of 50 states are currently Real ID-compliant reported according to the Department of Homeland Security. However, not many United States citizens have been issued a Real ID. The Real ID Act is fully enforced in most of the states and they are now issuing compliant IDs. Check your documents now and get it updated.
